What we did
Three ways we showed up

Skits, memes and animations
TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X
Short skits, animations and memes showed how we leak data every day. Influencers J Segera and Kenyan Dictionary took #FichaUchi to campus crowds, and it trended on X twice.

Focus groups in 9 counties
144 people
Small, honest conversations on how people use, share and protect their data, and why they rarely report scams.

Community radio
9 stations
Talk shows on Ruben FM, Mtaani Radio, Radio Mikayi, Jowi Radio, Radio Yetu, Radio Isikuti, Kimuri FM, Sheki FM and Lulu FM, with listeners calling in. TV pick up on Citizen TV, TV47 and KTN followed.
Focus groups
9 counties, 144 voices
Every county had a mix of women and men aged 18 to 34.
What people told us
In their words
“We don’t have much of a choice to opt out of sharing our data. It’s either you give them what they are asking for or you don’t get to use their service.”
“We all know when we are being scammed.”
“Mambo ya data ni complicated. Nashindwa ni vipi unaweza weka data private.”
Data stuff is complicated. I don’t know how to keep my data private.
What we learned
Three things
that stuck.

People feel forced to share
Hand over your data or lose the service. That leaves people feeling powerless and exploited.
Scams go unreported
People are embarrassed, and trust in the police is low. Social media feels like a better place to complain.
Just tell us why
People said they would trust organisations more if they explained why data is collected, how it is kept and when it is deleted.
