Five ways we showed up

Activity 1

Online, with the crew

Facebook, Instagram and TikTok

From June to August the campaign ran in three monthly arcs: Launch and Legitimise, Entertain and Embed, Inform and Activate. Mudata led, joined by Amani, Eric and Mlinzi aka Champeeh, created with the ODPC. The best post, a relatable scenario comic, reached 26,086 people.

TVET sessions with the ODPC

One college per county

Each session opens with a short play, then moves into a data protection session on the ODPC’s mandate and how to report misuse. First up was Likoni Technical and Vocational College in Mombasa, with 234 students registered.

Training the messengers

Maono Space, Malindi

A song, a comic and a QR code

Every engagement

The creatives wrote and recorded a Ficha Uchi song, performed live at every session. The comic book went to TVET students, and T shirts carry a QR code back to this site.

What we learned

Three things
that stuck.

Amani raising one finger, about to correct someone
1

Scenario comics win

The best post, a relatable scenario comic, hit about 6% engagement, far above the campaign average. Kiswahili also beat English on Instagram.

2

Reach is not repetition

Most people saw the campaign only once or twice. Next, we will show the same people a story three to five times, so it sticks.

3

Theatre opens doors

Creative, interactive formats drew strong engagement at every site. Surveys in community settings need simpler, offline friendly versions.
