What we did
Three ways we showed up

A national launch
Nairobi
Open Institute CEO Al Kags launched the campaign on 10 May 2021, days after public participation on the Data Protection Regulations. Citizen Digital and Soko Directory carried the story.

Three posts a day
264 posts and 88 original artworks, Monday to Friday, written the way people actually talk. X did the heavy lifting with nearly 7 million people reached.

Conversations in the DMs
WhatsApp Status
People replied with their own stories: passwords saved in the browser, Bluetooth left on, loan apps calling their contacts. Many said the same thing: now I know.
What people told us
In their words
“We need to meet them where they are.”
“Wueh, I can relate to this juu actually all my passwords ziko saved. But nitawacha ku save.”
I can relate. All my passwords are saved, but I will stop saving them.
“Thanks for this, now I know.”
What we learned
Three things
that stuck.

Data means bundles
Most people could not define data beyond internet bundles, and did not know laws protect them from data breaches.
Online alone is not enough
Impressions dropped as the weeks went by. Data protection is complex and needs conversations on the ground too.
Nobody knew the regulator
People had not heard of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner or who leads it. That shaped every phase after.
